One of the best parts about being a Disney Annual passholder and being local to the parks is having the time to find all the extra magical things at Walt Disney World. Did you know you could listen to an old-fashioned Party Line on Maine Street U.S.A.?
Main Street U.S.A. is inspired by Walt Disney’s childhood and the film Lady and the Tramp. Walking down Main Street gives you the feeling of traveling back to a simpler time. The smells, the sights, the sounds! You can hear the Main Street vehicles, the Main Street Citizens singing, and maybe the Dapper Dans.
Did you know you can also listen to some juicy gossip? Once you enter the Magic Kingdom, stay to the right-hand side. Go past the Town Square Theater and the Tony’s Town Square Restaraunt. You will see a set of shops right in front of you. The Chapeau Hat Shop is where you can listen to the Disney Party Line.
A party line is a telephone line or circuit shared by two or more subscribers. A majority of Bell System subscribers in the mid-20th century in the United States and Canada were serviced by party lines, which carried a billing discount over individual service; during wartime shortages, these were often the only available lines. Party lines provided no privacy in communication. They were frequently used as a source of entertainment and gossip, as well as a means of quickly alerting entire neighborhoods of emergencies such as fires, becoming a cultural fixture of rural areas for many decades. I listened to the Disney World party line for a few minutes and was cracking up at what I was hearing. The phone call lasts just over 3 minutes.
If you need a break from the heat, browse the shops on Main Street, grab an iced coffee from Starbucks, and listen in on the Disney Party Line.
